Project Overview
ED is the new innovation in drivers education experience. With a physical device, and an application, ED will automatically generates routes to aid student driver in practice.
My Role
As the Interaction lead, I led the development of the main Unity simulation for a driver's education simulation and also contributed during research phase. My role aimed to reimagine the learning journey for aspiring drivers, blending innovative technology with user-centric design principles.

The problem
In the US, the driver's education system often feels outdated, with learning materials and systems lagging behind. Student engagement is low, and feedback from private driver education programs varies widely, resulting in students hitting the road with differing levels of comfort and skill.
The Solution
Ed transforms young driver education through AI and the metaverse, customizing learning to target weaknesses and boost road rule retention. Its user-friendly device, integrated into cars, tracks routes, monitors progress, and offers real-time feedback. With tailored AI, Ed provides consistent, personalized learning, enabling self-paced education without obligatory lectures, ideal for busy schedules.
Features

Skills that are required from the DMV are split into easy to achieve checkpoints.
ED's AI analysis gathers driving data to give personalized experience.
Browser through each checkpoint to learn your current progression.
Build skills based on obstacles

Input a destination and ed will create courses based on the student's selected skill.
Preview the course with Metaverse visualization built on previous driving data.
Customize the difficulty of the training course.

Create courses to practice obstacles

Review performance by looking through your past routes.
Visualization of your driving are provided after each course is completed, mistake are also highlighted for improvement.
Base on the metric score given by the ED system, progression is made to earn your license
Visualize your past performance

Progress towards your license
Progression is represented by an overall percentage bar and a checkpoint driving track.
A notification will be sent when you have achieved a checkpoint.
Once all checkpoints are completed, a checklist of documents is provided to be approved for a license.

Discover
After conducting research, we discovered that existing Driver’s ED courses are managed by independent companies. These courses provide ample room for interpretation regarding road rules and heavily rely on individual instructors, resulting in inconsistency. Consequently, students often hit the road with varying levels of comfort and proficiency. Our survey, targeting young drivers aged 15 to 24, revealed a common issue: dissatisfaction with the quality of instruction and a desire for a more effective learning experience.

The ED ECOsystem
Key finding

To enhance the current driver’s education system, we examined the service life cycle of a newly designed program. Our blueprint aims to develop a system that is not only cost-efficient but also sustainable. We achieve this by providing users with a comprehensive package at the beginning of the product life cycle. Users can conveniently return the product by simply resealing the package.
By constructing a foundational ecosystem tailored to the requirements of modern-day students, we swiftly pinpointed their primary needs. These needs served as the basis for establishing four core principles within our ecosystem. As a result, student drivers no longer have to disrupt their daily routines to access data-driven, consistent evaluations of their driving skills for improvement.
Advanced Tech
ED device gathers data such as GPS, acceleration and braking to the app.
Personalized
Data collected will help ED best understand what kind of driver you are.
Fun!
Simulation of driving makes ED much more engaging and fun to use.
standardized
ED standardizes drivers education by using data collected from the users.
Unity prototype

One of my primary contributions to the Driver's ED project was prototyping the Metaverse concept, enabling users to generate simulated driving visualizations. To illustrate this concept, I developed a simulated video using the Unity program. The video on the lfet showcases a preview before drivers embark on a course, and on the right is where drivers can identify and learn from their mistakes.
Looking Back

A step into the world of unity ...
This project represented my initial attempt to incorporate Unity into the UX design pipeline. Looking back, it was a formidable challenge. I found myself initially overwhelmed by Unity's vast capabilities and potential However, through committed learning and immersion in object-oriented programming principles, I adeptly navigated this learning curve. Equipped with newfound proficiency, I effectively produced multiple interaction prototypes, playing a pivotal role in our team's Metaverse concept creation. Subsequently, Unity has seamlessly integrated into my repertoire of prototyping tools.
